Not Super at Midnight

Perhaps you were aware of Saturday's "Super Moon". This is a phenomenon where the moon is the closest it will be to earth and, therefore, appears larger than usual. Saturday night's full moon was 221,802 miles from earth and appeared 14% larger than usual.

In Chicagoland, we had clouds, heavy cloud cover. We didn't get to see any moon, super or otherwise. Sunday night was more of the same, with thunderstorms passing through the area. Last night was the first night where it was clear enough for the moon to be visible and it was quite visible.

I went to bed at 11:15. It took me about 15 minutes to fall asleep but I was awakened an hour later by light shining in the window. I have sheet-weight curtains which keep out about 75% of outside light, enough to make it dark but not enough that, if I have to get up, I can't see, once my eyes adjust to the darkness. The moon was shining in the south window.

This was one of those times when my camera fails me. The whole neighborhood was bathed in this silvery white light. It was brilliant. It was so bright, it was casting very clear shadows. I couldn't get a decent photo of anything, even using the auto timer setting and putting the camera on a stable object. The neighborhood looked magical and I would have liked to document that magic. The best I've got is this photo of that bright white moon as it climbed into the southern sky.

In about 10 minutes, it was past the point of shining in the window onto my pillows. I could hunker down and fall back to sleep. I was wishing it was a weekend, however. I would have wrapped myself in a blanket (it was chilly), made some tea and gone to sit on the deck to just be in that glorious light.

By the light, (By the light, By the light),
Of the silvery moon, (The silvery moon).
I want to spoon, (Want to spoon, Want to spoon)
To my honey I'll croon love's tune.
Honeymoon, (Honeymoon, Honeymoon),
Keep a-shining in June. (Keep a-shining in June)
Your silvery beams will bring love dreams,
We'll be cuddling soon,
By the silvery moon.
Your silvery beams will bring love dreams,
We'll be cuddling soon,
By the silvery moon. (The silvery moon).
Beverage:  Edinburgh's Finest tea
