That's a Surprise

Over a year ago, my guild mate, Amber, who lives in Australia, sent me two packages of this cookie called "Tim Tam". I'd never heard of it. They are biscuit-like cookies with a flavored layer sandwiched between them and the whole thing dipped in chocolate. It was a lot of fun to have something from the other side of the world.

I was in Target a couple weeks ago and had to walk down the cookie aisle to get from point A to point B. I thought I wanted cookies to nosh on but not really, I decided, until I saw this.

Wait...what? I've had the regular Tim Tam to the left. The caramel was new to me. I had to try those.

Here's a cross section of the cookie. There's the 2 biscuit layers and the cream layer with caramel and the outer chocolate shell. They are good but rather sweet. This is not a tray of cookies you'll sit down and eat all in one sitting.

For me, the attraction of these cookies is the connection I have to Amber. If I hadn't known about them, I would have passed them by. They aren't remarkable in their own right; more a novelty in the vast cookie aisle. What they remind me, though, is just how global life is now. These are an Australian cookie on the shelf of my Wheaton Target. Some executive made the decision to either import them or have a manufacturing plant make them here. I can't see them taking over much more in shelf space, but who knows. Something new and different could garner just enough of a following that we'll see other flavors besides plain chocolate and caramel on the shelves.

Aussie Goodness, Photo(s) 15

Part of the purchases on Sunday at The Fresh Market were these two items. I bought the licorice because I have a World of Warcraft friend, Amber, who lives in Australia.

It's not a healthy supper by any stretch of the imagination but I was so tired that I decided this was it;  fast, with sugar for energy. It didn't work. I was still way tired. I think it's coming down from the adrenalin rushes of the past month. But here are my impressions of these.

The licorice. First of all, they don't spell "licorice" correctly. (snicker) Second, it was not at all like the licorice I'm used to here.

The first thing I noticed was the instant smell of strawberries. My typical strawberry licorice doesn't emit an odor you can detect when you open the package. I smelled strawberries. In fact, it was more strawberry than the organic strawberries I have in the fridge.

Second, this was almost like fruit "leather". If you don't know what that is, it's pureed fruit, spread out and dried, then cut into strips. It's reasonably easy to make at home and is a great way to use up excess fruit when it's in season. You can control the amount of sugar and other additives. There's no high fructose corn syrup in this licorice, but the other ingredients were similar to what I've seen on American licorice packages.

The taste was superb. It was easy eating. The pieces actually melted in the mouth and the strawberry taste was through the entire piece. It could become my new favorite strawberry licorice if it wasn't so expensive.

Now for the root beer.

This was interesting because I didn't buy the beverage because it was made in Australia. I bought it because it was cheaper than similar beverages and I wanted some soda. (It was very interesting to me that this store carried Coca-Cola but no other mainstream soda and nothing else from Coke's extensive product line. There was no Sprite or root beer, just Coke.) After I got it home, I realized it was Australian.

The first thing I noticed was the pop top.

The pop top itself dates from 1959. It was invented by a guy who struggled with opening a bottle of soda one handed. When he invented the pop top, sales of beverages in aluminum cans skyrocketed and gave us one of the best songs ever.

"I blew out my flip flop
Stepped on a pop top.
Cut my heel had to cruise on back home."

From that humble invention, which lent itself to so many projects and cut heels, we moved to the pop top that doesn't leave the can without major effort. I'd never seen this kind of opening device before. As the tab says, you pull up, peel back the aluminum and underneath is a plastic ring that pops open with an audible pop.

I don't get around much so perhaps these are on beverages in the US, but this was new to me. It opened easily, even for someone with arthritis, but was a complete seal.

How did this taste? Well, first of all, I was surprised this was from Australia. In 1996, we made our last visit to England to see my late pen-pal and her family. We took with us a can of A&W Root Beer because we'd read that root beer is not found in the UK. We chilled the can for 24 hours and then sat around the table giving them a sample. They were not impressed. "How can you drink this stuff!?" was the consensus.

It's a matter of what you've grown up with. "Root beer" is an American creation born of the desire to have something to drink but not having familiar ingredients at ready disposal. Recipes abound on the Internet for making your own root beer. (Note: I have not tried the recipe linked. I merely linked it so you can see the ingredients used for root beer made with roots. Some recipes use a "root beer extract" and not the actual roots. This article explains which roots actually go into the drink.) The ingredients are not found in England. Settlers made do as people will and created a uniquely American drink. To have something like this from Australia was going to be an experience.

It's not sweet. I have to admit I was expecting the taste of current American root beer and this was not. The initial taste was bitter. I thought, "Crap. I'm going to have to pour out all 4 bottles. This is not what I was expecting." It wasn't, but several sips later and I realized I was tasting root beer as it used to be, before the advent of high fructose corn syrup. Sugar based root beer always had a slightly bitter taste to it, that was something of the appeal. That's why it held up so well in root beer floats. The bitter complimented the sweet of the ice cream. The more I drank, the better this became.

I tend not to drink things immediately. A mug of tea will last me a couple hours and I'm drinking room temperature tea by the time I get to the bottom. The same is true of soda. Even on a hot day, which is just right for an ice cold Dr Pepper, I won't drink the whole thing at once. This root beer is best when it is cold. At room temperature, it's more bitter and less blended in flavors. It was still good, but less so than it is cold. I don't have any vanilla ice cream, but I'm considering getting some to try it in a float. This brought back memories of family picnics, summer night spent sitting on the front porch stargazing, hot August days where the air just didn't move, fireworks and the sound of Minnesota Twins baseball games on the TV. It hearkens back to a different era for me.

It's too bad these are so expensive, but then, it's probably good they are. I'm not inclined to have them always in the house.

Crafty Gnomes

Back in early December, I received a box from Amber in Australia that contained the following.

Over the weekend, I decided to open this up to see just what was involved in creating a gnome. Here is the top layer of the box.

The kit contains felt and black embroidery floss. What's really exciting is the book.

There are eight different gnomes I can make. The Vampire looks hysterical. Or perhaps, Avast, me hearties! I be a pirate.

I could go with the regular garden variety gnome. He comes with a fish.

The best part of the book is that all the patterns are included.

So after I've made the gnome of my choice, I just need to get some felt and I can make all the other gnomes. Do you know what this means?

If I could get my act together and get crafting, I could make gnome ornaments for Christmas. If I were really crafty, I could take the basic gnome pattern and make gnomes of other professions. Cooking gnome anyone? I'm not that crafty but a gal can dream.

I have opted not to join the Valentine exchange. I have a major project I need to do and making Valentine's just won't fit into my life right now. Part of me is sad, but a big part is reasonable. I have a tendency to over-extend myself at times. I am being realistic when I don't think I'll be able to finish Valentines.

I set the build a gnome aside for the moment. Other things occupy my attention, but I will be back. I just can't decide which gnome to make first.

It Came From a Land Down Under

I got a box a week ago, a big box.

It sat on the floor without me examining the contents beyond looking to see if anything was broken, for about a week while I worked on getting things wrapped and shipped. I finally opened it over the weekend. The girls had inspected the exterior thoroughly, but when Mija fell into the box trying to get one of the closed flaps open, they left it alone.

I wish I could have gotten a photo of a cat with packing peanuts attached to her fur. Oh the indignity.

The box came from Australia where my friend, Amber, lives. It was packed with all sorts of goodies. First of all, we have these.

When we talk about food, she often mentions Tim Tams. My remark is an erudite, "Huh?" She wondered if they would melt since they are two wafer cookies with a chocolate moussey center covered in chocolate. Oh dear me. It's a good thing we don't have these here. Seriously. Very seriously. I preferred the one on the right, the all chocolate version. The mint in the one on the left was a bit strong for me. I took them to work and my co-workers liked them. They said they wouldn't eat them all the time, but they fit the spirit of Christmas. I would snarf, inhale, the ones on the right without a second thought, they were so good.

After that came a birthday present.

I have not opened this, yet. Here's the back of the box.

I have never seen anything like this anywhere and I like to think I'm up on the off-beat, weird, more than a little askew gifts. This makes me giddy with excitement. Creating my own garden gnome? How awesome can this be? After Christmas, when things are  more quiet, this gets my full attention. Arise my gnome army! Time to take over the world!

There was also a Christmas present down in the bottom of the box.

For sure that string wrap got played with. I have other gifts piled on top of this box now so Mija, in particular, can't attack the bauble any more than she's done.

Thanks to the Internet and World of Warcraft, I have a dear friend in Australia. The world might be more homogenized than we'd like to admit, but there are very easy ways to send a piece of you and a piece of where you come from to someone half-way around this globe. I hold these gifts and I think of Amber standing in a store in Australia. Australia! Now, here they are in my living room in North America. I tell myself that some day we will meet. I hope that's true. For now, I am very content to hold these gifts and know that she picked them out for me. To me, it feels like a part of her was in that box along with packing peanuts that stuck to Mija.

Reclaiming the Table

Two posts down is a view of the table with all sorts of wrapped packages. I was out of package sealing tape and would have to wait to box everything up until more was purchased. On a trip to the post office Friday, I bought a roll. We set it aside so I could mail a couple of bubble mailers and then I promptly forgot it. The clerk did, too. She even looked around to make sure we had everything. It was 7:00 p.m. before I realized I didn't have it.

Perhaps I would have been believed at the post office, had I gone in first thing and explained the problem. It wasn't much money so if they said, "Without clerk verification, we can't do anything," I wasn't too upset. In the travels of yesterday to finish everything off, I just picked up another roll. I had a coupon at JoAnn Fabrics and that made the roll really cheap.

When I got home, there was a package in the mailbox. I am down to waiting for ordered items to arrive so I wasn't surprised. I was surprised when I opened the package and here was the roll of tape. Since I was mailing flats with my address on them, it was very easy to match up who bought the tape, get my address and send it to me. Complain all you want about the post office, that's service.

So, last night, I wrapped. I have been saving boxes since July. I look at a box and think, "Hmmmm. Will this be a good size for Christmas?" I used to save all sorts of boxes, from 6 inch square cubes to 2 foot by 10 inch by 18 inch rectangles. You just never know when you'll need a box.

But boxes take up space and the more you save, the more space they need. They don't always nest well and they had taken over the space on the kitchen table. Last night, I cleared all the boxes off the table.

I was up until 1 a.m., but, dang it, I was on a roll. I wrapped and wrote the card and found the box and packaging. I labeled and addressed and stickered. The post office is advertising Sunday hours but I have too much to do today to head over there. This is going to be a process. Tomorrow, the red bag gets mailed. I did all the cards that don't need a personal letter. I have two flats that have to go to Canada tomorrow. It takes at least 2 weeks to get items there so I need to get those out this week if I hope they are in time for Christmas. The parcel to Australia went out on Friday.

What's left? Well, I'm waiting on stuff to arrive. Then it needs to be wrapped, boxed and shipped. I'm organized this year. I can actually sit down and not worry that something has to be shipped or I don't know what I'm getting someone and I have to endure the crush of shopping in a struggle to find "the perfect" gift.

I'm done.

I keep waiting for something to pop up and mock me. "No, no you're not."

It's all Amber's fault.

I have a friend in Australia named Amber. She's been going through a rough patch at the moment. It's been hugely stressful and her boyfriend and I have decided she's not eating. It's not a case of not eating properly, she's just not eating.

So, 2 days ago we were talking online as we are want to do and she mentioned how upset her life was making her. Aha! Just the opening I needed. "Do you want some 'motherly' advice?" I asked. "Sure," she replied.

I then told her to go to the grocery and buy $20 of anything she wanted. "Don't just hang out in the produce section unless that's what you want. I do hereby give you permission to fill up your cart with junk. You need comfort food right now."

Yesterday, she makes the comment that her boyfriend brought her Oreos. I have not thought about Oreos in months, yes, months. I have noticed them in the store, but I'm really not all that interested in them, unless a friend says she has some and I don't. (sigh)

With the July 4th holiday approaching, I headed off to the grocery after being allowed to leave work early. I needed to get a few things which included, you guessed it...
I don't believe I've had this kind.

I set the bag down so I could photograph it for the blog and it was instantly scrutinized. When she realized there was nothing for cats, she expressed her displeasure.
I guess I should be grateful she didn't lie on the bag.

I brought the bag into the office so I could blog about this and decided to open it. I half figured the "Lift" tab on the front would make it into my list of "vexes". It actually opened quite nicely. We'll see how it closes.

Mija came charging into the office because the rustle of the bag sounded just like the bag with kitty treats in it. That's actually pretty funny to watch. They can be sound asleep and all I have to do is shake a treat bag and, I swear, Mija materializes at my feet. Let's just say she was more than a bit disappointed when the smell emanating from the bag was one of peanut butter.

I will eat a few while playing the game today. I may or may not have milk with these initial cookies. I figure, as a public service, I should try these without milk and then with milk.

Hey, it's the least I can do on a holiday weekend.
